The On the Rocks sofa, designed by Italian designer Francesco Binfaré for Edra, challenges the traditional idea of what a sofa should be.
Inspired by the natural forms of rocks and the way people naturally relax on them, the design transforms a sofa into a flexible landscape for everyday living.
Inspired by Nature
The inspiration came from a simple observation.
While in Puglia, Binfaré noticed how people naturally rested on rocks and cliffs.
Although the surfaces were hard and irregular, people adapted their bodies to the shapes of the landscape, finding their own comfortable positions.
This led to a simple but powerful idea:
What if the sofa could adapt to the person, instead of the person adapting to the sofa?
Rather than creating a rigid structure with a fixed seat and backrest, he designed a system of independent soft forms.
A Sofa Without a Fixed Position
One of the defining features of On the Rocks is its modular structure.
The system consists of four individual seats in different geometric shapes and two independent backrests. The elements can be arranged, separated, and repositioned according to the needs of the space and the people using it.
Bring the modules together to create a generous conversation area.
Separate them to create individual places to relax.
Change the position of the backrests to create a different experience.
The sofa becomes less like a fixed piece of furniture and more like a landscape that can evolve.
From Rock to Softness
The visual language of the design is inspired by the solid, irregular forms of natural rock, but the experience is completely different.
The generous shapes and soft upholstery create a relaxed and welcoming feeling, while carefully developed cushioning provides the comfort expected from a contemporary sofa.
This contrast is what makes the design so distinctive:
It looks solid, but feels soft.
It looks sculptural, but is designed for everyday life.
Furniture That Shapes the Space
On the Rocks is not simply placed inside a room.
Its modular composition can actively define the space around it.
In an open-plan living room, the sofa can create a natural gathering area without using walls or partitions.
